Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage Factsheet
Contaminated water is poured into the ceramic pot. The water slowly passes through the pores and is collected in the lower container. The treated water is stored in the container until needed, protecting it from recontamination. The user simply opens the tap at the base of the container when they need water.
Strategies and Integrated Household Environmental Health Interventions Report of a Workshop for selected countries in East Africa Entebbe, Uganda 27 - 29 June 2011 WHO/UNICEF International Network on Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage (INHWTS) organised in collaboration with the Water Institute at the University of North Carolina
HOUSEHOLD WATER TREATMENT AND SAFE STORAGE
1.1 Background on household water treatment and safe storage Having safe drinking-water is a fundamental human need and human right for every man, woman and child. People need clean water to maintain their personal health and dignity. Yet hundreds of millions of individuals live without clean water.
Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage Factsheet: Membrane Filters Ultrafiltration membranes will remove large and heavy particles such as sand, bacteria, protozoa, helminths, and some viruses. They will not effectively remove most dissolved or small substances such as salt or smaller viruses.
Introduction to Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage
Offered by École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne. It is well known that water treatment at the household level can lead to dramatic improvements in drinking water quality. But does Household Water Treatment and Safe Storage (HWTS) also have global relevance? What are the potential treatment solutions and how do they function? Is there a standard strategy for successful HWTS

World Water Week 2025 – Water Currents, August 20, 2025. Policymakers, researchers, and private sector representatives from around the world will soon gather in Stockholm for World Water Week, where they will be discussing local and global efforts to strengthen water security in a changing world.
of household water treatment and safe storage can have a substantial effect in reducing diarrhoeal disease, depending on the type of water supply.5 Achieving the SDG target on access to safe drinking water will, therefore, require a concerted continuation of work done to date. Key to these efforts are water safety plans, recommended by the WHO
- How is an anionic polyacrylamide flocculant synthesized?
- In this study, an anionic polyacrylamide flocculant was synthesized by ultrasonic initiated template copolymerization (USTP), using sodium allylsulfonate (SAS) and acrylamide (AM) as monomers, poly diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride (polyDADMAC) as template, and 2,2′-azobis [2- (2-imidazolin-2-yl) propane] dihydrochloride (VA-044) as initiator.
- Why is anionic polyacrylamide chosen?
- Anionic polyacrylamide is chosen because the intramolecular electrostatic repulsion between polymer segments forces the polymer chains to adopt a more extended conformation, increasing the efficiency of bridging flocculation.
- Does polyacrylamide structure affect flocculation of bentonite clay?
- Shaikh and coworkers studied the effect of polyacrylamide structure on the flocculation of bentonite clay. 208 Using turbidity as a powerful measure, they compared flocculations using cationic, anionic, and amphoteric polyacrylamides of varying molecular weights.
- Which polymers are used in TPAs-U self-assembly of anionic flocculants?
- In this study, the novel template polymerization and ultrasonic initiation system were applied in the self-assembly of anionic flocculants (TPAS-U) using poly (allylammonium chloride) (PAAC) as template, acrylamide and sodium p-styrene sulfonate as monomers.
