  • What is polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis?
  • Different separation media and mechanisms allow subsets of these molecules to be separated more effectively by exploiting their physical characteristics. For proteins in particular, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) is often the technique of choice. What is polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and what is protein electrophoresis?
  • What is ready gel polyacrylamide precast gel?
  • Ready Gel polyacrylamide precast gels are designed to fit the Mini-PROTEAN ® Tetra cell and are ready to run. Simply lock them into the cell, load your samples, and get sharp, beautifully resolved protein bands in 30–45 min. Our precast gels provide high quality and reliability and eliminate exposure to toxic unpolymerized acrylamide.
  • Why do we use polyacrylamide instead of agarose?
  • In PAGE, rather than agarose, we use a chemical called polyacrylamide. Varying the percentage of polyacrylamide in the gel lets us change the size of the pores in the gel, which means that we can separate different sizes of protein in different percentage gels. Typical gel percentages are shown in the table below.
  • How are polyacrylamide gels characterized?
  • Polyacrylamide gels are characterized by two parameters: total monomer concentration (%T, in g/100 ml) and weight percentage of crosslinker (%C). By varying these two parameters, the pore size of the gel can be optimized to yield the best separation and resolution for the proteins of interest.
