Greywater treatment by slanted soil system - ScienceDirect
Slanted soil system is a low cost, simple system suitable for greywater treatment. Performance of the slanted soil system for greywater was evaluated in light of required water quality for irrigation reuse. Removal rate of particle COD and BDOC, those may cause clogging of irrigation facility, were 94–97% and 88–89%, respectively.
The small scale decentralised wastewater treatment facilities (e.g., constructed wetlands or waste stabilisation ponds) for greywater treatment were proved to be effective in water sustainability improvement as treated water can be reused in agricultural irrigation and aquaculture and the amount of open drainage can be greatly reduced.
The implications of household greywater treatment
The twelve greywater treatment and reuse scenarios investigated during this study are documented in Table 1.They range from a baseline scenario of no treatment and no reuse (Scenario A) to full household greywater treatment and recycling (Scenario J; bathroom, laundry and kitchen greywater treated and reused for toilet flushing, laundry washing and irrigation).
The results exhibited the feasibility in alternative treatment options and a source separation strategy of household greywater and night soil, which could improve biological treatability of domestic wastewater and achieve a possible recycling policy of human waste as excess nutrients in Thailand.
