Application of High Viscous Friction Reducers in Saudi
The objective of this paper is to showcase the work done to improve proppant placement using high viscous friction reducers in Saudi unconventional reservoirs. Clean-based fluids, mainly water with friction reducer additives, do not exhibit enough viscosity to place the desired proppant volume.
SPE Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Annual Technical Symposium and Exhibition (1) Hydraulic fracturing technology has been widely used in oil and gas industry to increase production since 1947. Linear and crosslinked guars are the most commonly used fracturing fluid system. Friction reducer (FR) performance has been enhanced by adding a FR

Chemical Degradation of Polyacrylamide during Hydraulic
Polyacrylamide (PAM) based friction reducers are a primary ingredient of slickwater hydraulic fracturing fluids. Little is known regarding the fate of these polymers under downhole conditions, which could have important environmental impacts including decisions on strategies for reuse or treatment of flowback water. The objective of this study was to evaluate the chemical degradation of high
2.2. Synthetic flowback water. Synthetic flowback water was obtained by reacting the synthetic fracturing fluid with 25 g/L shale at 80 ℃ and 83 bar for 24 h simulating downhole conditions encountered in natural gas reservoirs. The variation in these conditions across different gas formations can be large , and its impact on polyacrylamide degradation was investigated previously.

Around 0.04 per cent of the fracturing fluid is a friction reducer called polyacrylamide, which is commonly used in facial cream and contract [sic] lenses. This is added to the water to minimise pressure loss due to friction with the pipe as the water flows the one mile or greater distance from the surface to the shale rock far below.”

- What is high molecular weight polyacrylamide (PAM)?
- Provided by the Springer Nature SharedIt content-sharing initiative High molecular weight (106–3 × 107 Da) polyacrylamide (PAM) is commonly used as a flocculant in water and wastewater treatment, as a soil conditioner, and as a viscosity modifier and friction reducer in both enhanced oil recovery and high volume hydraulic fracturing.
- What is polyacrylamide (PAM) used for?
- npj Clean Water 1, Article number: 17 ( 2018 ) Cite this article High molecular weight (10 6 –3 × 10 7 Da) polyacrylamide (PAM) is commonly used as a flocculant in water and wastewater treatment, as a soil conditioner, and as a viscosity modifier and friction reducer in both enhanced oil recovery and high volume hydraulic fracturing.
- How dangerous is polyacrylamide (PAM)?
- 4.1.1. Polyacrylamide (PAM) As PAM is extensively used in our daily lives, it is essential to be aware of its potential hazards. Studies have indicated that PAM exhibits low or non-toxicity to humans, primarily due to the large sizes of polymers, which restrict their ability to penetrate the skin.
- What factors affect the flocculation effect of cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM)?
- Cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) is a commonly used flocculant for water treatment. Factors that affect the flocculation effect and can be controlled manually include the type and dosage of CPAM, wastewater pH, stirring time and settling time, and their reasonable setting is critical to the flocculation effect of CPAM.
