Spectrophotometry was used to study the interaction of high-molecular polyacrylamide with cationic dyes: Methylene Blue, Acridine Yellow, and Toluidine Blue. A study was made of the low-temperature hydrolysis of high-moleculer-weight polyacrylamide Praestol under the action of NaOH in dilute aqueous solution. The performance of the hydrolyzed and nonhydrolyzed polymer when combined with aluminum sulfate in treatment of natural water was estimated.
Study of the properties of hydrolyzed polyacrylamide
The hydrolysis degree of PAAm hydrogels was determined using carbon–nitrogen elementary analysis, which has been introduced in the experimental section. The three hydrolyzed gel samples showed similar degrees of hydrolysis of approximately 60%. Under alkaline conditions, PAAm was easily hydrolyzed at lower temperatures (40–70 °C).
