Potassium acetate adds flexibility to drilling muds
A shale-protective, water-base drilling fluid containing a high molecular-weight, partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide and potassium chloride has been used in many wells around the world. A laboratory test for evaluating the ability of water-base muds to protect stressed shales under dynamic conditions was used in the initial development of the

PHPA (powder form) is a readily dispersible additive designed to provide cuttings encapsulation and shale stabilization in freshwater to saltwater drilling fluids ranging from low solids to weighted muds.
Potassium chloride (KCl) salt has been found to be more effective in the development of inhibitive water based drilling fluid system due to its high shale inhibition capability . Many industries use polyacrylamide to mitigate wellbore instability problems arising due to swelling and dispersion of shale and cuttings inside the wellbore because
Evaluation of polyacrylamide-grafted-polyethylene glycol
Evaluation of polyacrylamide-grafted-polyethylene glycol/silica nanocomposite as potential additive in water based drilling mud for reactive shale formation. and various concentrations of potassium chloride (KCl) salt were added to the base fluid after aging at 95 °C to analyze the salt tolerance of the developed drilling fluid system.
A class of water muds that use partially-hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (PHPA) as a functional additive, either to control wellbore shales or to extend bentonite clay in a low-solids mud.As a shale-control mud, PHPA is believed to seal microfractures and coat shale surfaces with a film that retards dispersion and disintegration. KCl is used as a shale inhibitor in most PHPA mud designs.

Fracturing fluids normally comprise of a base fluid, a proppant and other chemical additives like fluid loss control agents, breakers, clays stabilizers, friction reducers and biocides (Gottardo et al., 2016).The additives are meant to perform some specific functions in the fracturing fluids (Gottardo et al., 2016).Prior to the injection of the proppant-laden fluids, pad fluids without
Sustainable development of enhanced geothermal systems
A number of factors affect geothermal energy generation: the optimal combination of geological conditions, including high geothermal gradient, the presence of hydrothermal fluid, high heat flux, high rock permeability and high rock porosity (Cheng et al., 2016).Depending on these factors, the grade of the geothermal resource is defined and geothermal systems are classified, as shown in Fig. 1

- What is nonionic polyacrylamide?
- Nonionic polyacrylamides represent the smallest group of acrylamide-based polymers, representing about 25% of the total polyacrylamide market. Nonionic polyacrylamide is somewhat misleading since in the manufacture of acrylamide, regardless of the route, some degree of hydrolysis of acrylamide occurs.
- What is a high-molecular-weight nonionic polyacrylamide?
- High-molecular-weight nonionic polyacrylamides are routinely used in the mineral processing industries as thickeners and flocculants [36–38]. The product types for polyacrylamides are solutions, liquids (emulsion or dispersion), and dry powders. The forms each have their own set of advantages and disadvantages as will be discussed in the following.
- What is an anionic polyacrylamide?
- The anionic polyacrylamides in the oil field industry are designated by the generic name of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (PHPA), although they are in actuality copolymers . Both high- and low-molecular-weight polymers are used as drilling fluid additives.
- How is ionic polyacrylamide prepared?
- Anionic polyacrylamide can also be prepared by the hydrolysis of nonionic polyacrylamide ( Fig. 34.7 ). The process generally involves the addition of a strong base to a homopolymer of polyacrylamide. This can be done in an aqueous solution, inverse emulsion. Recently, a process to produce dry forms of hydrolyzed polyacrylamide has been developed.
