Biological Pretreatment - Brewery Wastewater 101
One byproduct of aerobic treatment is sludge, the wastewater equivalent of spent yeast. And it’s a lot of sludge. Essentially what you’re doing with aerobic pretreatment is converting soluble BOD in to solids (sludge), and this sludge needs to be disposed of. And of course it’s more complicated than that.
Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) is a measure of the nutrient value of wastewater. Total suspended solids (TSS) is a measure of suspended solids in wastewater. Brewery wastewater is higher in sugar and alcohol compared to normal domestic wastewater which most treatment plants were designed to treat. The pH swings from high to low as well.

* The terms ‘high’ and ‘low’ are relative to regular domestic wastewater that most municipal treatment plants were designed to treat. Hard to believe, but I’ve been doing wastewater in general since 1996, and brewery wastewater specifically since 1998.
Sewage treatment plant design calculation
To cater for peak hourly flow, as requiredin the design of sewers, pumping stations and components of the treatment plant.Peak flow factor =4.7 x pˉ¹¹ where p is the estimated PE in thousands.Cumulative design flow (l/s) = PE x peak flow factor x average daily flow (L/person)(24 x 60 x60)= 293 x 4.7 x pˉ¹¹ x 65925 / (24x60x60)= 1.05 x 10

Waste water treatment in brewery industry, Review
2.3.1. Brewery Wastewater Brewery wastewater is a significant waste or negative product in a brewery process. Although, substantial technological improvements have been made by breweries in South Africa to reduce wastewater generation, yet an estimated 5 to 6 L of waste effluent is generated per liter of beer produced.
station. At this point the brewery was ready for the final keystone project. In 2012 Waterleau was contracted on a turnkey basis to design, build and commission a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant for the Cascade Brewery. With this plant, Cascade Brewery would meet the latest imposed discharge
- What is polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE)?
- Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) is a quick and sensitive method for analyzing the composition of mixtures of proteins. Since the early 1970s, this method has become a routine and frequently used analytical procedure in all protein chemistry laboratories, and as such, biology students should of course be familiar with this basic technique.
- What is acrylamide gel electrophoresis?
- The basic theory behind SDS gel electrophoresis is as follows: Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis utilizes a cross-linked acrylamide support through which the protein samples are electrophoresed. The acrylamide gel is formed from acrylamide monomer and ‘bis’-acrylamide, which provides the crosslinking between monomer chains (Fig. 1).
- What is the difference between agarose gel and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis?
- In polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, polyacrylamide gel separates macromolecules, i.e., proteins of size five kDa to 250 kDa. Similarly, it can also isolate DNA of 5- 500 bp size. In agarose gel electrophoresis, agarose gel separates DNA, RNA, and protein. It can isolate DNA about 50-20,000 bp in size.
- What is the working strength of TBE in polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis?
- TBE is used at a working strength of 1× for polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. This 1× concentration is twice the strength usually used for agarose gel electrophoresis.
