An Introduction to Cooling Tower Water Treatment
In a counter-flow cooling tower, water sprays are used to distribute the warm water (see Figure 8). The fan deck supports the motor and fan of the water spray system. The stack is the structure (typically a cylinder) that encloses the fan and directs warm, humid discharge air upward and out of the cooling tower.
As water evaporates in a cooling tower, dissolved solids (and suspended solids) remain behind. These solids concentrate and increase the scaling, corrosion, and fouling potential of the water.

WATER TREATMENT PRACTICES FOR CHILLER BY-PASS SYSTEMS
4.2 Water Treatment As previously indicated, normal water treatment of chiller circulating water consists of oxygen scavenging with sodium sulfite residual control. When the chiller is by-passed, the air-conditioning coils and a portion of the chiller circulating water piping is exposed to the oxygenated circulating water from the cooling tower
controlled by proper water treatment. Cooling tower operation is simple. The circulating cooling water picks up heat from the process heat ex-changers and passes through the cooling tower. Evapo-ration cools the recycled water as it passes through the tower. As a result of evaporation, the dissolved solids in the water become concentrated.
