An ion exchange water purification apparatus in a unitary housing which makes use of gravity and a manometer effect to flow water through the water treatment beds. The apparatus has an untreated water reservoir at the top, untreated water flows by gravity and the manometer effect through a series of three water treatment beds containing carbon, cation exchange resin and anion exchange resin
The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for desalting and purifying water by continuous ion exchange and, more particularly, to a desalination process for the treatment of brackish water, sea water, industrial wastes and sewage effluents utilizing continuous countercurrent treatment with weak base anion exchange resin and a weak acid cation exchange resin.

Ion exchange resins are used to remove dissolved particles from liquids. Therefore, functional groups are bonded to the polymer beads. These functionalized polymers adsorb particular anions or cations from the liquid and discharge others. Water treatment is the best-known and biggest field of application for ion exchange resins.
An improved process for regenerating the ion exchange resin in a water softening system. The process substantially reduces the amount of water and salt required for regeneration of the resin. The process includes the steps of venting the resin tank to the atmosphere and draining eventually all of the water from around the resin. Next, a brine solution is added to the resin tank.
