Microwave Pretreatment - ScienceDirect
MW-assisted pretreatment has been successfully employed to pretreat various biomass, and has many advantages: (1) It improves pretreatment speed, and thus reduces the reaction time; (2) it increases pretreatment selectivity; (3) it decreases the pretreatment energy input; and (4) it enhances enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency.

Thermal-alkaline pretreatment of polyacrylamide flocculated waste activated sludge: Process optimization and effects on anaerobic digestion and polyacrylamide degradation. Bioresource Technology 2025, 281, 158-167. DOI: 10.1016/j.biortech.2025.02.095.
The present work deals with reviewing the pretreatment processes used in ethanol and biogas processes from waste materials. However, since wastes comprise a wide range of materials, we dedicate this review only to lignocellulosic part of waste materials in order to shorten the discussion.
Influence of deflocculation on microwave disintegration
Subsequent microwave pretreatment yielded a chemical oxygen demand (COD) solubilisation of 31% and 21%, suspended solids (SS) reduction of 37% and 22%, for deflocculated and flocculated sludge, respectively, with energy input of 14,000kJ/kg TS.
Co-digestion samples containing thickened waste activated sludge and fat, oil and grease were subjected to three different pretreatment methods, i.e., microwave at 175 °C, hyper-thermophilic stage at 70 °C, and conventional heat at 70 °C. The soluble matter extracted from the un-pretreated and pretreated samples were subjected to an ultrafiltration (UF) process using four different membrane
- What is high-purity poly-aluminum chloride (PACL)?
- Poly-aluminum chloride (PACl) is one of the common coagulants for water and wastewater treatment. A new Chinese national standard of PACl has been implemented, where the concentration of insoluble substances, iron and heavy metals is to be controlled strictly, then researches on the preparation of high-purity PACl are needed.
- Is polyaluminum chloride a good coagulant for water treatment?
- Polyaluminum chloride (PAC) is highly effective coagulant for water treatment over conventional coagulants because of low dosage requirement, shorter flocculation time, smaller amount of sludge, high efficiency and low aluminum residual in treated water [ 6 ].
- Does pH affect the performance of polyaluminum chloride (PAC)?
- The performance of PAC was dependent on pH. The synthesized PΑC was efficient coagulant for water treatment. The present work was aimed to synthesis of polyaluminum chloride (PAC) using calcium oxide as a basification agent and optimization of process parameters on the yield of medium polymer species in PAC.
- What is polyaluminum chloride PAC?
- Polyaluminum chloride PAC is a widely used chemical compound that finds its application in various industries, primarily for water treatment. In this blog post, we will delve into the different grades of PAC, the production methods, and its specific uses in different sectors.
