Waste management in Russia
Russia is a big producer of waste as one of the biggest economies in the world. As the disposable income of Russian households increased throughout the 2000s, consumption increased, which led to increased waste generation. Over 200 cities in Russia exceed pollution limits, and this is increasing as more vehicles appear on the roads.
In Russia, approximately 70 per cent of drinking water comes from surface water and 30 per cent from groundwater. In 2004, water supply systems had a total capacity of 90 million cubic metres a day. The average residential water use was 248 litres per capita per day. One quarter of the world’s fresh surface and groundwater is located in Russia. The water utilities sector is one of the largest industries in Russia serving the entire Russian population.
Wastewater Management: Northern Solutions for Northern
Effective wastewater treatment is fundamental for environmental and human health protection. In the North, this can be challenging: the extreme climate eliminates the possibility of using several systems that are common in southern Canada, and the remoteness of the region and lack of road access to many communities increase costs and make timely maintenance, repairs and monitoring difficult.
