New Cairo Wastewater Treatment Plant - Water Technology
New Cairo Wastewater Treatment Plant is the first public-private partnership (PPP) project in Egypt. The plant will initially have a capacity of 250,000m³/day, to serve over one million people. The final capacity will be 500,000m³/day. Construction commenced in February 2010 and the plant is expected to be operational by March 2012.
The largest wastewater treatment plant in Egypt is located in Gabal el Asfar to the Northeast of Cairo, serving about 9 million people and treating 2 million cubic meters per day in 2009. The plant discharges into the Belbeis Drain and then into Bahr El Baqar Drain (BBD), which in turn drains to Lake Manzala 170 km away from Cairo.
