Drag reduction characteristics of polyacrylamide additives
Hand and William2 and Pirih and Swanson25 have dealt with structural effects of drag reduction. Studies on drag reduction characteristics as observed in tubes of different diameters using polyacrylamide of high molecular weight are reported in this paper.
Drag reduction efficiencies of HPAM/XG/KCl solutions were 28 and 20% compared to 10% DR of 1000 wppm HPAM/KCl solution. It was found that the presence of XG in binary solutions significantly reduced the negative effect of salt ions on HPAM molecules.
Turbulent Drag Reduction by Polyacrylamide and Other
Drag reduction increased with molecular weight, concentration and flow rate for all polymers approaching values of 70 to 80 percent and, in the case polyacrylamides, better than 25 percent drag reductions have been observed in tap water than in API brine due to the polyelectrolytic expansion of the chains in tap water.
The influence of polyacrylamide (PAM) as drag reducing polymer on flow of Iraqi crude oil in pipe lines was investigated in the present work. The effect additive concentration, pipe diameter, solution flow rate and the presence of radius elbows on the percentage of drag reduction (%Dr) and the amount of flow increases (% FI) were the variables of study.
