Bench-Scale Study of Chemically Enhanced Primary Treatment
MIT has been involved with bench-scale analyses of chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT) at several wastewater treatment plants in Brazil. The five plants studied were Pinheiros and Ipiranga in Sao Paulo, ETIG in Rio de Janeiro, and Tatui and Riviera de Sao Lourengo, smaller communities in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil.
High energy consumption is an important issue affecting the operation and development of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This paper seeks energy-saving opportunities from three aspects

Achieving energy neutrality in wastewater treatment plants
Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) consume high amounts of energy which is mostly purchased from the grid. During the past years, many ongoing measures have taken place to analyze the possible solutions for both reducing the energy consumption and increasing the renewable energy production in the plants. This review contains all possible aspects which may assist to move towards energy
proposed to accomplish this goal, is Chemically Enhanced Primary Treatment, or CEPT. CEPT vastly improves the effectiveness of an existing wastewater treatment facility, enabling the plant to not only meet increasing flow demands, but to attain higher removal efficiencies at the same time.

Washington, DC: The National Academies Press. doi: 10.17226/11912. Don Harleman coined the term “chemically enhanced primary treatment” (CEPT) to describe the use of low doses of a primary coagulant, typically a metal salt, and potentially also a polymer, in the first stage of municipal wastewater treatment. Don’s idea was for
At the centralized wastewater treatment plant, after treated wastewater is discharged through Lo Ren canal (the regional discharge channel) through a network of open ditches B4000, and closed pipes B3000, with a total length of 759.3 m (B4000= 235 m, B3000 = 524.3 m)

An analysis of the 88 identified slum upgrading projects 1 showed that legal, social and political upgrading measures often complement the dominant physical infrastructure upgrading that were the primary focus for the purpose of this study ().Another observation made was that most projects were implemented at a national/regional/state scale or at the city/metropolitan area-level ().
