Mechanical Dewatering | SSWM - Find tools for sustainable
Dewatering removes water from sludge (residual sludge from wastewater treatment plants such as activated sludge systems, or faecal sludge from on-site sanitation such as septic tanks or pit latrines) making it easier to handle and less expensive to transport, to compost (see also small or large scale composting), to incinerate (see also small or large scale incineration) or to dispose of in a landfill.
The process of dewatering water plant lagoon sludge involves pumping the sludge through a static mixer while adding a flocculent (polymer) to condition the sludge on its way to the dewatering box. The system is capable of dewatering 12,000 gallons of 1.5% solids sludge per day.
Water Treatment Plant Residuals Dewatering Feasibility Study
The City of Shasta Lake owns and operates a surface water treatment plant (WTP) south of the Shasta Lake dam. The facility is rated to treatup to 6.7 m illion gallons per day (mgd), but treats an average of
Sludge-drying beds provide the simplest method of dewatering. A digested sludge slurry is spread on an open bed of sand and allowed to remain until dry. Drying takes place by a combination of evaporation and gravity drainage through the sand. A piping network built under the sand collects the water, which is pumped back to the head of the plant. After about six weeks of drying, the sludge cake, as it is called, may have a solids content of about 40 percent.

Dewatering. Sludge treament. A further reduction of the sludge amount is mostly necessary after the thickening. The liquid sludge has to be dewatered and has to conform to a dry and porous form. Dewatering can be done naturally (dry beds, solar drying), however this is only possible during a long period of time.
For the choice of the correct dewatering process it is important to consider a multiplicity of further boundary conditions: Quantity, structural situation, disposal, regulations, availability, personnel etc. More information about sludge treatment and reduction are on the following pages: Stabilisation Thickening Sludge drying
Sludge thickening and dewatering - SUEZ Group
Two processes can be used to thicken sludge: Static thickening, by gravitational settling Static thickening calls on conventional and innovative techniques, such as Drainis Turbo that eliminates the water at speeds higher than the conventional speeds, thereby optimising the downstream dewatering phase (reduction of the amount of equipment, energy and reagent consumption, etc.).

Chemical Conditioning - Wastewater Sludge - Climate Policy
Inorganic chemical conditioning increases sludge mass. Approximately one part of additional solids can be expected for each pound of ferric chloride and lime added. Design Example 3.1 A wastewater treatment plant produces anaerobically digested sludge that needs to be dewatered using recessed plate pressure filters.
