Using a mixture of wastewater and seawater - ScienceDirect
This study was conducted to evaluate the potential of the marine diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum in nutrient removal coupled with biodiesel production using different ratios of mixed municipal wastewater (MW) and seawater (SW) as the growth medium. The results indicated that P. tricornutum exhibited high nutrient removal efficiency with the ratios of MW: SW = 1:1 and MW: SW = 2:1, e.g. 87.7
In comparison, with the algal-based treatment in this work, ammonia was also efficiently reduced to non-toxic levels. However, the alga was unable to remove nitrite. It should be noted that Spirulina cultivated in marine fish wastewater exhibit similar performance (Wuang et al., unpublished work). A different algae species or a combination of

Waste Water Treatment on Ships - Bright Hub Engineering
The treatment of wastewater produced on board a ship has now become mandatory by many maritime bodies. There are several recognised methods of dealing with the wastewater; biologically where air is injected into the effluent, promoting micro-organism activity, or the modern method using reverse osmosis. This is known as Membrane Bioreactor processing and has proved an efficient, safe method of
