Removal of pharmaceuticals by a surface water
Several pharmaceuticals were followed through a drinking water production process on the river Meuse. Tramadol and levetiracetam were the most common compounds while cytostatics were not detected.
In this review, we focus on GAC because it has been used widely in drinking water treatment and tertiary treatment in STPs. Stackelberg et al. (2007) found that GAC facilities in a conventional WTP accounted for 53% removal of the tested PPCPs, whereas disinfection and sedimentation accoutred for 32% and 15%, respectively.

The sampled DWTP located in NE-Spain is able to treat 720 m 3 h −1 and supplies drinking water to around 50,000 inhabitants. The DWTP works with three treatment lines operating in parallel, one equipped with NF, and two lines equipped with RO membrane filtration racks (see Fig. 1).All three lines are fed from groundwater wells, directly influenced by infiltration from Besós River, a

POSEIDON is focused on the assessment and improvement of technologies for the removal of pharmaceuticals and ingredients of personal care products (PPCPs) in wastewater and drinking water facilities to prevent the contamination of receiving waters, groundwater and drinking water by planned and unplanned indirect potable water reuse of treated urban wastewater.
Chapter 7. Pharmaceuticals and personal care products
Removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products through tertiary and advanced treatment Water scarcity forces people to rely on unsafe sources of drinking water. The use of poor water quality can increase the fate and removal in conventional wastewater treatment plants and tertiary treatment units. 4.
The Llobregat River in Spain receives treated waters from wastewater treatment plants, and serves as a source of drinking water for the city of Barcelona. Fifty-eight pharmaceuticals out of 74 monitored were detected in at least in one sample.
