The Biocidal Products Regulation which came into effect on 1st September 2013 following the adoption of the Directive initially proposed in 1998. The aims of the Regulation are to ensure the safe use and formulation of products intended for use as biocides and to remove substances deemed to pose a significant risk, from the European market place.

The Biocidal Product Directive (98/8/EC) came into force on 13 May 2000 and covered 23 Product Types (PT) in four main groups: disinfectants, preservatives, pest control products and water treatment chemicals.
