Molecular weight of amphoteric polyacrylamide: How it
Amphoteric polyacrylamide (AmPAM) is a linear water-soluble polymer that has been applied in papermaking as an agent for flocculation, retention, filtration, and dry-strength improvement. However, AmPAM with different ranges of molecular weight (MW) have different properties in these processes.
Amphoteric flocculants have anionic and cationic moieties on the same macromolecule and is used to remove both positively and negatively charged contaminant particles in suspensions.Amylopectin based flocculants have been found to be highly efficient flocculant and hence it has been chosen as base polysaccharide.
AMPHOTERIC POLYACRYLAMIDE
1, flocculation: PAM allows suspended material by charge neutralization, bridging adsorption, since flocculation. 2, adhesion: through mechanical, physical, chemical effect, since adhesion. 3, lowering resistance: PAM can effectively reduce fluid friction, the water can be added to trace PAM 50-80% reduction in resistance.
Through two‐phase aqueous polymerization, amphoteric polyacrylamide (AmPAM) emulsion, as an environmental friendly flocculant for the tannery wastewater, was firstly synthesized using ammonium sulfate aqueous solution as the dispersion, using acrylamide, cationic monomer ethylene methyl propenoyl‐trimethylammonium chloride (DMC), and anionic monomer acrylic acid (AA).
Amphoteric amylopectin: a novel polymeric flocculant
Amphoteric flocculants have anionic and cationic moieties on the same macromolecule and is used to remove both positively and negatively charged contaminant particles in suspensions. Amylopectin based flocculants have been found to be highly efficient flocculant and hence it has been chosen as base polysaccharide.
In the present work, a novel amphoteric chemically bonded composite flocculant (carboxymethyl chitosan-graft-polyacrylamide, denoted as CMC-g-PAM) was successfully prepared and used to flocculate the kaolin suspension. The flocculation performance of CMC-g-PAM in acidic, neutral, and alkaline conditions was systematically evaluated by light scattering in combination with fractal theory, as well
Polyacrylamide – PAM
Polyacrylamide(PAM), often referred to as “polymer” or “flocculant”. It is a long chain, linear organic polymer made up of individual monomer units with the molecular formula of C3H5NO and molecular weights ranging from 3,000,000 to 30,000,000 Daltons. PAM is a dry white or light yellow powder similar in shape to table salt.
Amphoteric polyacrylamide flocculant with both anionic and cationic groups provided a clear anti-polyelectrolyte effect and a wide pH value range of the application, especially for the tannery

Amphoteric flocculants usually are prepared by amination of lignosulfonates. For example, the amphoteric flocculant can be prepared with lignosulfonate (or its silicone-modified product) and polyacrylamide [26]. This flocculant can increase the retention of small fibers and fillers for papermaking, which improves the physical properties of paper. The amphoteric lignin flocculants also can be prepared by graft copolymerization.
By grafting and hydrolysis, first anionic moiety has been installed on amylopectin and then a cationic moiety has been chemically loaded on anionic amylopectin both by conventional and microwave processing. The flocculation efficiency of the amphoteric amylopectin has been tested in kaolin and Fe-ore suspensions.

In the current work, a kind of amphoteric chitosan-based flocculants (3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (CTA) modified carboxymethyl chitosan, denoted as CMC-CTA) have been prepared. CTA is a kind of low toxic quaternary ammonium reagents. The flocculation properties of CMC-CTA were studied systematically both at the laboratory and pilot scales.
- What is anionic polyacrylamide (PAM)?
- Volume 224, article number 1382, ( 2013 ) Anionic polyacrylamide (PAM) is a linear, water-soluble anionic polymer that is widely used for erosion control and water quality protection.
- Can anionic polyacrylamide be used in water treatment?
- What's more, the authors discussed the application status of anionic polyacrylamide in water treatment. Based on these reviews, future research perspectives relating to its synthesis and application were proposed. This review summarizes the synthesis methods for anionic polyacrylamide.
- Where is Pam used in water treatment & sludge dewatering?
- PAM used as a flocculant in water treatment or sludge dewatering is disposed in high-solid biogas digestors or landfills. 94 Although PAM is typically considered to be relatively recalcitrant to organic decomposition, 95 it can be degraded during anaerobic digestion.
