Cholera was common in the United States in the 1800s, but has been nearly eliminated by modern water treatment facilities and sewage treatment systems. That means that contaminated drinking water is the major cause of cholera epidemics and if water treatment systems in developing countries are improved, the disease could be nearly eliminated.
Randomized Controlled Trial of Hospital-Based Hygiene
Severe cholera without adequate rehydration kills up to half of affected persons ().The World Health Organization estimates that 3–5 million cholera cases occur worldwide each year ().Studies have identified multiple risk factors for Vibrio cholerae infection, such as drinking street-vended water, placing one’s hands into stored household water, lack of drinking water treatment, eating
