Waste Water Treatment by Coagulation and Flocculation
All waters, especially surface waters, contain both dissolved and suspended particles. Coagulation and flocculation processes are used to separate the suspended solids portion from the water.
In coagulation treatment, a harmless chemical such as alum causes all of the particles to give off a positive charge and thus clump together, making them easier to filter. Coagulation is especially useful in removing the chemical phosphorus from water. Yet coagulation water treatment is far from being a new process.
Water supply system - Coagulation and flocculation
The flocculation tank has wooden paddle-type mixers that slowly rotate on a horizontal motor-driven shaft. After flocculation the water flows into the sedimentation tanks. Some small water-treatment plants combine coagulation and sedimentation in a single prefabricated steel unit called a solids-contact tank.
14.3 Coagulation and flocculation with extracts of particular seeds Special contribution from Dr. Samia Al Azharia Jahn, Water Treatment Adviser Botanical identification Early attempts at water coagulation with plant materials arose through “self-help” by poor people who had no access to groundwater. Coagulation and Flocculation in Water and Wastewater
Organics removal and enhanced coagulation are effective with traditional coagulants like aluminum sulfate, ferric chloride and ferric sulfate, as well as formulations like polyaluminum chloride (PACl) and acid alum. Acid alum formulations are aluminum sulfate with 1 to 15-percent free sulfuric acid.
Coagulation and Flocculation. Groundwater and surface water contain both dissolved and suspended particles. Coagulation and flocculation are used to separate the suspended solids portion from the water. Suspended particles vary in source, charge, particle size, shape, and density. Correct application of coagulation and flocculation depends upon these factors.
Coagulation and Flocculation | Water Treatment | Waste
The primary purpose of the coagulation and flocculation is to destabilize the charged colloidal particles in water and make them to settle so as to remove turbidity from the water. In addition to removing turbidity from the water, coagulation and flocculation process removes many bacteria which are suspended in the water and can be used to remove color from the water.

Coagulation / Flocculation Tanks : VIRIDIS Engineering Sdn Bhd
Coagulation neutralizes repelling colloidal solution Allowing polluting matter to form floccules Coagulant added into fully mixed tanks with short retention time and high turbulence mixing Coagulants can be chitosan (natural), poly-aluminium chloride, aluminium sulfate Flocculation is considered more gentle mixing process Addition of flocculants aid small floccules to gather for easier
However, coagulation and flocculation can be used for building a compact treatment plant (also called a "package treatment plant"), or for further polishing of the treated water. PRIMARY PURPOSE: * Remove solids that pass through headworks and grit equipment. * Lessen organic loading on following biological process
Coagulation and Flocculation
Abstract. Coagulation and flocculation constitute the backbone processes in most water and advanced wastewater treatment plants. Their objective is to enhance the separation of particulate species in downstream processes such as sedimentation and filtration.
