Product certification is a common practice in the U.S. among manufacturers that make drinking water treatment products or products that come in contact with drinking water. This certification can help products meet different regulations put in place by city, state or federal governments.
Manufacturers of drinking water treatment products often struggle to determine which certification body they should choose for their products. Many companies mistakenly assume NSF Intl. is the only option for certification to NSF/ANSI standards—after all, the name of the organization is right there in the standard title.
NSF Testing and Certification for Water Treatment
In 1990, the U.S. EPA replaced its own drinking water product advisory program with NSF standards, including NSF/ANSI 61, for all materials and products that treat or come in contact with drinking water. Today, most plumbing codes require certification to NSF standards for pipes and plumbing components in commercial and residential buildings.
