High-molecular-weight partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamides are widely used in enhanced oil recovery. Mechanical degradation of these polymers as a result of flow through pumps, chokes, valves and at the sand face has been recently reported to have a negative impact on the application.
Polyacrylamides (PAMs) are used to increase the dry strength of papers by hydrogen bonding. PAM of molecular weight of 100,000 to 500,000 is used at about 0.5% on pulp and also acts as a retention aid. It is sometimes used to allow increased use of lower quality pulps such as secondary and hardwood fiber.
