Coagulation and flocculation water treatment chemicals are used to remove iron, suspended solids, organic color, and hardness from influent water. In wastewater treatment these clarification aids help with the removal of other contaminants such as oil, phosphate and heavy metals.
Flocculation and Sedimentation Water Treatment
Coagulation destabilises particles through chemical reaction between coagulant and colloids, and flocculation transports the destabilised particles that causes collisions with flocs. Essentially, a coagulant is added to water in order to gather any waste in the water such as dust, earth particles, fish eggs, etc., into flocs.

It has been used in wastewater treatment as a coagulant in the phosphorous removal process.

Large, heavy particles settle out readily, but smaller and lighter particles settle very slowly or in some cases do not settle at all. Because of this, the sedimentation step is usually preceded by a chemical process known as coagulation.
Coagulation – flocculation helps remove compounds from effluent and thereby makes it possible to separate water and particles. COAGULANT and FLOCCULANT products must be used for paint spray booths, robots and tunnels with a water curtain to remain clean and operate as efficiently as possible.
Up-scaling of tannin-based coagulants for wastewater
The tannin-based coagulant from Acacia mearnsii was successfully applied in dual system with cationic polyacrylamide flocculant for industrial wastewater treatment at pilot plant scale. It was shown to satisfactorily treat the water and generate less sludge.
